Freedom Fighter James Lawson

Meghna Chandra (URBS '13 and current PhD student at Penn's School of Social Work) is a member of the Saturday Free School, and this year they are celebrating the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi throughout the city with symposiums and cultural celebrations (www.yearofgandhi2019.org). On October 3rd they will be honoring his life at Philadelphia City Hall with a City Council Resolution and Mayoral Proclamations to recognize the work of Civil Rights leaders James Lawson, Bernard Lafayette, Dianne Nash, and anti-apartheid and peace activists Romesh Chandra and E.S. Reddy.

The Reverend James Lawson will be there to share his wisdom about how to fight for peace and wage nonviolent struggle for our times. Reverend Lawson played a crucial role in establishing SNCC, the lunch counter sit ins, and freedom rides during the civil rights movement. He has remained a peace activist all his life.
