Urban Education Minor - Secondary Education Concentration

The Secondary Education Concentration is for students preparing to be secondary teachers of English, social studies, science, or math, and students interested in the teaching and learning of adolescents.

Note: The College limits the number of courses taken outside of SAS to four, but permits more if you have taken an adequate number of SAS courses. Please consult with your College advisor to be sure you will not exceed your limit.


Required Coursework: 7 course units

1. URBS 202 or EDUC 202 – Urban Education**

(The following course lists are not exhasutive; other courses may be substituted but require prior approval from the Urban Education advisor)

2. Child or Adolescent Development course -

PSYC 151 - Language and Thought (requires PSYC 001)
PSYC 280 - Developmental Psychology (requires PSYC 001)
PSYC 281 - Cognitive Development (requires PSYC 001)
EDUC 360- Human Development
EDUC 522- Psychology of the African-American
EDUC 560- Human Development
EDUC 557 - Developmental Theories and Applications with Adolescents
EDUC 561- Adolescent Development
EDUC 562- Personality and Social Development
EDUC 574- Race/Ethnicity in Human Development

3. Pedagogy and Curriculum course*-

EDUC 545 - Perspectives on curriculum and pedagogy for social justice 
EDUC 616 - Teaching & Learning
EDUC 671 - Adult Literacy

4. Content Area course*-

Secondary teachers often need to teach content beyond the scope of a traditional single academic major. For instance, an English major might choose to take a course in history or linguistics; a history major might choose more English or math courses, or a chemistry major might choose a course in another science such as biology, physics, geology or earth sciences, or English.

5. Subject-specific “Methods Course”: 

EDUC 629: Teaching English/Language/Literacy in Middle and Secondary Schools (for English certification)** 
EDUC 627 – Teaching in Middle and Secondary Schools (the correct section for math, science, or social studies)**

6. EDUC 657 Advanced Teaching Methods, subject-specific**

7. Teaching Diverse Learners**

Urban Education Minor Capstone – The final project from one of the core courses above is elaborated for the Capstone presentation.


*Either #3 or #4 should be an ABCS course. Check the Netter Center for Community Partnerships website for a complete listing of available Academically Based Community Service Courses.

**Requires a 90-minute/week field placement arranged by the instructor or the GSE Secondary Education Coordinator, Kate Kinney Grossman kinneym@gse.upenn.edu 



This program can lead to certification with an additional course, EDCE 705, which includes supervised full time student teaching and a field seminar, typically taken in a 9th semester. (EDUC 515 or EDUC 555 if taken during the traditional 8 semesters.)

Unfortunately, Pennsylvania will only certify US citizens.

Prerequisite requirements for certification include a writing course, an American literature course, 1 math course, and 1 additional quantitative reasoning course.

*Additionally, to be certified in a secondary education, the candidate must present adequate content course work in social studies, math, science or English. Please ask Maureen A Cotterill maureenc@gse.upenn.edu to do a “transcript review” as early as possible so that you can take any necessary prerequisite content courses.
