A Quick View of Penn Urban Studies    

URBAN STUDIES MAJOR REQUIREMENTS (14 c.u.s)

  • Intro to Urban Research (URBS2000) -- Overview of urban research methods, 1 cu
  • Fieldwork Seminar (URBS3000) -- Students complete a 15 hr/week internship and
    take a weekly seminar, designed to connect theory & practice, 2 cu’s
  • Senior Seminar (URBS4000) -- Students carry out an original research project, 1 cu
  • Disciplinary Focus -- 3 cu’s in another discipline, considered an area of specialization
  • Themes -- Students take 7 cu’s distributed among 5 themes:
    o History of Cities
    o Comparative &Theoretical Dimensions
    o The Built Environment
    o Urban Economics & Finance
    o Public Policy & Government

URBAN STUDIES MINOR REQUIREMENTS (6 c.u.s)

  • 1 Urban Studies theme course, in History of Cities or Comparative and Theoretical
    Dimensions
  • Select 3 course units of Urban Studies Electives (can include up to one advisor-approved
    urban-related course)
  • Fieldwork Seminar (2 cu’s)

URBAN STUDIES STUDENTS:

  • 19 declared Urban Studies minors
