2012: Criminalizing the City

Great American City: Chicago and the Enduring Neighborhood Effect

Robert Sampson, Henry Ford II Professor of the Social Sciences and Director of the Social Sciences Program at Harvard’s Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, will discuss his latest book, Great American City: Chicago and the Enduring Neighborhood Effect. Based on one of the most ambitious studies in the history of social science, Great American City argues that communities still matter.

Secure Communities: Immigration, Deportation, and Sanctuary Cities

The Obama administration has deported more immigrants than any president ever, partly through Secure Communities and related links between federal and local law enforcement. Yet Philadelphia and many other cities have policies meant to protect unauthorized immigrants. This panel discussion will explore how cities have negotiated, collaborated, and pushed back against federal deportation programs, promoting different visions of security. Speakers will discuss the challenges and implications for cities and for immigrant and receiving communities.
