According to recent estimates, on any given night in the United States, roughly 650,000 persons are homeless. Among those, approximately 110,000 are persons experiencing chronic, or long-term homelessness. While policymaking efforts to end chronic homelessness through permanent supportive housing have been successful, rates of chronic homelessness still fluctuate widely from jurisdiction to jurisdiction, and there is a serious lack of information about community level determinants. Tom Byrne's study addresses the gap in the literature by using modeling inter-community variation in the rates of chronic homelessness. In doing so, the study provides evidence that can be used to inform efforts to end chronic homelessness.
