Event
Panel: 2-3:30pm | Light Reception: 3:30-6pm
As city enthusiasts, we are hyper-conscious of the issues that cities face and the many local actors who have crafted promising solutions, but who struggle for lack of supportive policies and funding. Amidst the recent tragedies involving communities of color and police in cities nationwide, the eyes of our nation will turn to Philadelphia in just a few days. But during this critical moment for urban communities across America, will leaders at the Democratic National Convention include bold urban policy reforms in their party platform for 2016 and beyond?
Less than 24 hours before the convention begins in our city, join some of your favorite Penn URBS professors, classmates, and friends for an exciting and timely panel discussion, “Politics and the American City: Urban Policy in 2016 and Beyond," featuring:
• Jordan Schwartz: Director of External Affairs at Philadelphia 2016 Host Committee. Jordan is an Urban Studies alum (2001) whose career has involved him intensively in progressive politics and executive government at the state and city levels.
• Mark Stern: Professor of Social Policy & History. Co-Director of the Urban Studies Program, Mark studies the social impact of arts and culture in American cities.
• Domenic Vitiello: Associate Professor in City and Regional Planning, a historian who studies urban economic history, immigration, and food systems
• Janice Madden: Professor of Regional Science, Sociology, Urban Studies, and Real Estate. Janice studies labor market issues, including discrimination, inequality, and the geography of jobs
• Ira Goldstein: President of Policy Solutions at Reinvestment Fund. Ira is an expert on housing and development finance policy and the spatial dimensions of economic and community revitalization. He was instrumental in the creation of PolicyMap.
• Dan Denvir (Moderator): Dan is a reporter at Salon and a former staff reporter at Philadelphia City Paper.
