Please join us to hear this year's Urban Studies Honors students describe their research! In the Honors Seminar, students revise and refine their senior thesis papers with an eye toward publishing them in an academic journal or similar publication. They also write an a short op-eds on a policy point that comes out of their research and submit it for publication.

A comparative analysis of the Frank Rizzo and Octavius V. Catto memorials in Philadelphia, PA and what their (re)interpretations tell us about the polarization of history, memory, and politics.

Mile High Migration: Refugee Integration and Public Transportation in Denver, Colorado

This research integrates surveys of refugees, transportation analysis, and interviews with experts to construct a narrative on the influence of public transportation usage and attitudes in refugee integration. The primary finding is that refugees are opting out of public transportation due to its inadequacy for their specific needs.

Using Spatial Context and Demographic Analysis to Assess Surface Permeability in Philadelphia

This project uses supervised learning and demographic analysis to examine the environmental and social characteristics of surface permeability in Philadelphia. The methodology and conclusions produced can help inform future green infrastructure investments and stormwater management strategies.

Give Me Five: The Effects of an Extra Five Days on Vote-By-Mail Ballot Return Rates in Florida

An analysis of vote-by-mail ballot return rates after a 2019 legislative change expanded the vote-by-mail timeline in Florida. A brief examination of the use and partisan divide of vote-by-mail ballots amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

In Community We Trust: How Differing Conceptions of Community have Shaped Community Land Trust Work through COVID-19 and Beyond

My thesis is a case study into six different community land trusts, looking at patterns and differences between the CLTs, how each CLT conceptualizes community, and how that outlook shapes their work.

Photography and the Coronavirus Pandemic: A Case Study of #ICPConcerned: Global Images for Global Crisis

This project uses the International Center of Photography's exhibition #ICPConcerned, which brought together 1,000 crowd-sourced photographs from March–November 2020, as a case study to understand the role and power of photography amid the coronavirus pandemic.
