The University of Pennsylvania and West Philadelphia: The Interlocking Roles of Campus Security and Redevelopment in University-Driven Neighborhood Change

This paper explores the relationship between campus security and Penn-related redevelopment projects near campus. Its aim is to establish what the connections between these two factors tell us about the nature of university-driven neighborhood change, as a basis for conceptualizing how Penn can go about truly repairing its relationship with the community.

In the Bully Pit: Practices and Meanings in an Old-School Powerlifting Gym

This project looks at the meanings and norms that powerlifters in a West Philadelphia gym create during their training. It explores the ways that the gym members use practices to foster powerlifting success in an otherwise ordinary, if not dilapidated urban gym.

El Lado Olvidado: The Untold Story of Mexican Agriculture in the Age of Free Trade

Through the stories of agricultural workers in Mexico, this thesis explores the systemic failures of the Mexican government in easing the transition towards agricultural free trade.
