Immigrants Make the City

Immigrants Make the City

| McNeil Building, Room 286-7

After decades of decline, cities across America are witnessing growing populations, spurred by the influx of new immigrants.  What role do these immigrant communities play in the revitalization of the American metropolis?

This spring, students in an Urban Studies course at Penn (URBS 438, Social Science Studio) spent a semester doing original research to answer this big theoretical question. They focused on one city and one neighborhood -- the Italian Market in South Philadelphia -- to trace the ways in which immigrants are remaking the American city economically, politically and culturally.

Please join us for a presentation of our findings, followed by a discussion about immigration, revitalization and the future of urban America. Refreshments will be served.
