Penn Park Orchard Outreach Internship

Location: University of Pennsylvania, Facilities and Real Estate Services
Stipend: Hourly wage based on level of experience
Dates: May – November 2019
Schedule: 15‐20 hours per week

Position Description:
The Landscape Architecture group, within the Office of the University Architect, supports the University of Pennsylvania's mission by preserving and improving the campus landscape through
design, planning, research, outreach and ecological initiatives. Since 2014, Penn has partnered with the Philadelphia Orchard Project to design and implement an educational orchard in Penn Park that has expanded into a layered food forest, including edible and medicinal berries,groundcovers, perennials, shrubs, vines and fruit and nut trees.

This year, the orchard should produce an even greater quantity of fruit and medicinal plants. Working directly with the University Landscape Architect and Landscape Planner, this position will expand the educational opportunities of Penn Park Orchard with students and other partner groups.

Specific tasks include:

  • Facilitate monthly orchard work days for students, faculty and staff, working closely with Philadelphia Orchard Project staff and Urban Park grounds staff.
  • Develop and expand educational programming on orchard care, edible plantings, ecology and campus stewardship to Penn students and community partners.
  • Assist in estimating fruit harvest and sharing with wider community.
  • Maintain partnerships, including programming with Penn Garden, Philadelphia Orchard Project and Netter Center’s Agatston Urban Nutrition Initiative.
  • Coordinate online presence; strengthen campus awareness of the orchard.
  • Prepare final report for presentation to senior leadership.

Qualifications:

  • Current graduate student
  • Must have experience with growing food and food justice
  • Must have experience with outreach and engagement on a University campus
  • Must be able to work independently and is a creative self‐starter
  • Excellent writing and analytical skills
  • Excellent research and communication skills
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Excel
